What To Do When Your Water Is Discolored

Hampton Shaler Water Authority will have water breaks or be performing routine maintenance flushing of our system periodically.  When this occurs, it is a common occurrence for minerals to be stirred up in the system and create a discoloration to your water.

In the event of a water break, it can take any system up to 12 hours to settle back down and for the minerals to be removed from the water.  During this time, it is best if you do not run your water for a sustained period of time.  All you are doing is drawing the discolored mainline water further into your house.

Rather, check the water on a hourly basis by running cold water for 1-2 minutes.  If it runs clear, the discoloration has passed.  If not, please allow it more time to work its way out of the system.  Running hot water will only draw the discolored water into your hot water tank and complicate the matter.

The best remedy for discolored water is patience.
