HSWA Distribution System — At A Glance
It takes a lot of pipe to serve our 25,000+ service taps. In fact, it takes 359 miles of pipe. If you were to lay that all end to end, it would stretch from downtown Pittsburgh to South Bend, Indiana (right by Notre Dame).
Just under 78% of all pipe in our distribution system is either 6″ or 8″ in diameter, but we have sizes ranging all the way from 3/4″ up to 24″ in diameter, with some oddball sizes like 14″ sprinkled through the system.
The materials in our system are primarily either cast or ductile iron (nearly 80% combined), but HSWA installs virtually all new pipe in-house using longer-lasting PVC. We are diligently working to reduce breaks in our older infrastructure that have known break history.
