Press Release: April 23, 2025

Early evening, Saturday, April 19, 2025, Hampton Shaler Water Authority (HSWA) was made aware of a leak on the underside of the Sharpsburg elevated tank.  Immediately, senior employees contacted the third-party vendor contracted for steel tank maintenance and evaluations within the system.  The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Safe Drinking Water Division (PA DEP) was also notified of the situation which is not affecting the ability to provide safe drinking water and continued fire protection to the community.

HSWA is planning repairs to occur early next week, as materials, coordination with vendors and the governing body – PA DEP for emergency permits have to be finalized.  During repairs, the tank will be off-line, and alternative sources will be utilized.  After repairs are made, an approved tank coating will be applied, cured at least 24 hours, disinfected, and the water tested prior to returning to service.

The tank undergoes regular periodic inspections by a third party and more will be known as the cause after the internal inspection/repair is made.
