Residential Backflow Preventers
Effective January 1, 2007, any residential premise that is sold which is served by Hampton Shaler Water Authority, must have a dual check backflow preventer installed prior to closing. In accordance with the Authority’s cross connection control policy as amended by the Board of Directors on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 compliance shall be as follows:
- At least 2 weeks prior to closing the seller shall contact the Authority and schedule an appointment for an Authority serviceman to visit the premise and verify if the premise has an approved backflow preventer. (This service is provided for a $10 fee). Approved types are Watts #7, Apollo, Cash Acme or Wilkins 700.
- If the premise has an approved backflow preventer the Authority serviceman will complete and submit the necessary paperwork to the Authority.
- If the premise does not have an approved backflow preventer (dual check valve and thermal expansion tank), you will be immediately notified and informed to contact a registered master plumber for installation.
- After installation, the plumber shall complete the installation form and then contact the Authority for an inspection. The inspection of the new device must be made a minimum of 2 days prior to closing.
Failure to submit the necessary installation/certification form within the time periods specified would leave the Authority no choice but to terminate the water service until compliance is achieved. Just click on this link for a Certification/Installation Form for backflow preventers.
